What is Hypnotherapy? | History Hypnosis has been used as a form of healing since ancient Egyptian times. The ancient Greeks certainly used it and Hyppocrates, sometimes known as the father of modern medicine, makes reference to it in his writings. Hypnotherapy started to receive serious medical interest in the late 1870s, and in 1955 the British Medical Association endorced the practice of hypnosis in Medical School education. Since then it has become increasingly accepted as a way of dealing with a wide range of problems. Nowadays, there is even a hospital in Belgium that performs 10% of its operations using hypnosis as the sole means of anaesthetic. As the links between mind and body become increasingly understood, the role of hypnosis as a form of therapy is likely to increase still further. |
More and more people who find themselves 'stuck' in some aspect of their lives are turning to hypnotherapy.
Part of the reason that people find themselves stuck is habit: they bite their nails, they feel nervous in certain situations, they smoke, eat when they're not hungry etc. Virtually all of this behaviour is controlled by habit.
Habits run in the unconcious part of the brain; not the part we control conciously. And this is why some changes are hard to make.
In hypnosis the therapist takes the client into a relaxed, altered state. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the unconscious mind is revealed. The therapist then is able to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the patient, which become firmly planted in their mind. This in turn can change even the most deeply implanted habits.
This is why an increasing number of people are turning to hypnotherapy when other means of help have failed - and they are finding rapid and lasting relief.
